Let's be honest — buying a vacation dress online is a gamble. You're not in a fitting room, you're probably ordering at 11pm three days before your flight, and the last thing you want is to open the package and realize it's snug in all the wrong places right before you're supposed to be relaxing poolside.

Grab a tape measure first — yes, actually do this
I know, I know. It's tempting to just pick your "usual size" and hope for the best. But every brand cuts differently, and resort dresses in particular tend to run in weird, inconsistent ways because they're often flowy, wrap-style, or have unusual proportions.
Take five minutes and measure these, in your underwear, standing normally (not sucking in — we're going for accuracy, not aspiration):
- Bust — around the fullest part, tape level, snug but not squeezing
- Waist — your actual natural waist, which is usually higher than where your jeans sit
- Hips — the widest part, roughly a hand's width below your waist
- Length, if it's a maxi or midi — neck to wherever you want it to hit
Having someone else measure you is honestly easier than twisting around trying to read a tape in the mirror. If you're alone, do your best and don't overthink it.
Not all dress shapes are created equal
This is the part most sizing charts don't tell you: the style of the dress matters just as much as the number on the chart.
- Wrap dresses are forgiving and adjustable — if you're between sizes, go down.
- Shift and shirt dresses are more structured, so trust your actual measurements here.
- Maxis with an elastic waist are basically the safest bet for travel — comfortable, forgiving, hard to mess up.
- Fit-and-flare dresses live and die by your waist measurement, not your bust, so size off that.
- Off-shoulder or bardot styles are the least forgiving — if your bust measurement is borderline between two sizes, size up here specifically.
Think about what the dress actually needs to do
The best resort dress isn't necessarily the prettiest one — it's the one that can go from beach to dinner without a costume change. A midi you can dress up with sandals during the day and heels at night saves you a suitcase's worth of space.
A few honest notes on fabric:
- Jersey and some rayon blends barely wrinkle, which matters a lot if you're not planning to iron anything on vacation (same).
- Cotton and linen breathe better in humidity but will wrinkle — that's just the trade-off.
- If a dress has even a little stretch (spandex, elastane), it'll fit more forgivingly than one that's 100% woven fabric with zero give — worth checking the fabric content before you buy.
The mistakes people make over and over
- Ordering your "usual" size without checking the actual chart. Every brand's Medium is a different Medium.
- Forgetting that humidity is real. A lot of people size up slightly for tropical destinations, just for comfort — nobody wants to feel restricted in 90% humidity.
- Not checking the model's height against yours. A maxi that grazes the ankle on someone 5'7" will pool on the floor if you're 5'2", or hit mid-calf if you're 5'10".
- Ignoring the shoulder/bust measurement on one-shoulder styles, which are notoriously easy to size wrong.
